Good Afternoon! My hope for this Commander’s Corner is to serve as a “blog” of sorts updating members and parents on some of the progress that the encampment staff is making towards a GREAT summer encampment! I have a few things that I want to talk about today, and if you have any questions or comments, feel free to send me an email at email@example.com.
Planning for summer encampment starts during the previous year’s encampment. There feedback from staff and students that is taken into consideration for future activities. This year is no different. I am lucky to have a highly motivated group of Senior and Cadet staff that keeps driving on to make this whole thing possible. This year, however, is proving to be extraordinarily more challenging than most. We have decided to move the encampment location from Camp Lincoln in Springfield, IL to Marseilles Training Center just south of Chicagoland. This move was one of necessity as space was fast becoming a limiting factor at Camp Lincoln. With new procedures, activities, points of contact, etc… changing the location of this type of event is a rather massive feat. However, the Senior staff has stepped up to the plate and is handling the change wonderfully.
Speaking of new activities, MTC provides the opportunity to do things at encampment that we haven’t been able to do for a number of years! I’m going to leak some classified information here, so if you stumbled onto this page by accident, you’re in luck! Below is a list of our planned activities for summer encampment 2018. Unfortunately, most of these activities rely on outside agencies for instruction, so some of them are subject to availability of host agencies. This list is not inclusive and we are adding activities every week.
- Helicopter rides on IL Army National Guard aircraft
- Low ropes confidence course
- Powered and Glider orientation flights (CAP aircraft)
- Engagement Skills Trainer (Laser based small arms training simulator with simulated recoil)
- ISP swat and canine demonstration at a tactical training area on MTC
- and many more!
If you want to be a cadet cadre (staff) member, you need to get your application in ASAP. The window for applications ends on the 15th of march. Applications for cadet students will open on April 1st. Check the information page on April 1st for more information on how to apply.
The Cadet Encampment Assistance program had been renewed for 2018. Cadets will need to apply for CEAP through eservices. Summer encampment is not currently listed as an option on the application module. NHQ had been made aware of the issue and will be adding Summer Encampment to the list soon.
That’s all for today. Again, if you have anything you would like to add or know, please send me an email and I will try to get it addressed.
